New Law Introduces Tougher Sanctions Against Slander and Defamation

The Algerian upper house and the Senate are examining a law approved last week by the lower house that introduces tougher sanctions against newspapers that attack the president of the republic. Penalties include up to one-year jail sentence to authors of "slanderous expressions" toward the president. The new law will likely be approved by both bodies.
