A Problem of Civil Rights and Inequality
A peacefull demonstration organized
in the capital city Algiers by the newly formed civil right
organization called Coordination of Village Committees (Coordination
interwilayas des comités de village de Tizi Ouzou,
Béjaïa, Sétif, Bouira, Bordj Bou Arréridj,
et Boumerdès) and the Algiers Committee ended in
a bloodshed when security forces, aided by alleged civilian
"provocators," intervened.

In Morocco, a four-day rioting highlights
the repressive attitude of many in the security apparatus
and in the military reminiscent of the Basri regime. On
June 8th, a soldier stabbed a 16 year-old boy

Take Control of BNDE

Lone Star
The Saudi group Dalla
El-Baraka, a firm that has been investing heavily
in the Moroccan tourism sector, is reportedly on the
verge of purchasing a 67% stake in State-owned development
bank BNDE (Banque Nationale pour le Développement
Economique). Dalla El-Baraka is also preparing to
invest in Lone Star, a company that discovered oil

a budget surplus of Dh 22.4 billion generated by the

May Increase Cereal Imports
Algeria was the
Maghreb’s biggest importer of cereals in 2000. With
4.8 million tons of cereal, Algeria ranked 6th
importer worldwide behind Iran, Brazil, Japan, Egypt
and Russia, according to a US cereal exporter group
present during a seminar on the topic recently held
in Algiers, Algeria. The group predicts Algeria would
rank fifth in 2001 as it would boost its imports to
5 million tons.

is the Leading
Exporter to
Algeria
Last year
(2000), France maintained its third spot in Algeria’s
client list following Italy and the United States.
Algerian sales to France amounted to $2.3 billion
and France’s export to Algeria accounted for 22.9%
of the country's total imports, ahead of the United
States (11.46%), Italy (9.7%), Germany (7.03%) and
Spain (6.75%).
