Hikes Ahead
Although the
Moroccan government says it is focusing its energy
on controlling inflation, Moroccan households are
currently facing continued price increases for key
consumer staples such as flour, milk, margarine,
cleaning products, and school supplies. The recent

as the summer vacation season ended and schools
reopened their classrooms.

India's Ispat
to Acquire Algerian Steel Maker Sider
The
Indian company Ispat, one of the world largest steelmakers
is preparing to take a majority stake in the Algerian
state-owned steel firm Sider. The company has reportedly
agreed to buy 70% of the financially troubled Sider
and said it would maintain the workforce, estimated
at 12,000, for at least another four years.

Finance Minister
Fathallah Oualalou is predicting 4.4% GDP growth for
2002, compared to a projected 6.8% this year, and
a budget deficit equivalent to 3% of GDP (unchanged

General Tire Maroc
(GT) has gone into receivership after shareholders
failed to agree on a proposed rescue package. The
company, which ceased production in December last
year due to financial problems and industrial disputes,
lost Dh54.2 million in 2000 and Dh61.8 million in
the seven months to July.
