Algeria to Propose Major Overhaul of the Legal System in 2002 - Controversial Family Code to be Eliminated

The Algerian justice minister has announced that his department is preparing to overhaul the justice codes and propose major changes in the country's legal system. More precisely, the proposed system would merge the laws governing individuals (statut du personnel) into the civil code. Meanwhile, the penal code will expand in scope to include Internet-related crimes, money laundering, and telephone harassment.

Moroccan Airline to Reduce Workforce and Postpone Fleet Renewal Program

Moroccan airline RAM says its deteriorating financial position is forcing it to plan major cuts. As a result of a slowing worldwide economy and the September 11 terrorist attack in the United States, airlines worldwide have been affected by falling demand for air travel and RAM is among the multitude of airlines that have put forward plans to reduce their operating costs.

New Taxes Seek to Address Dangers of Industrial Waste

Companies involved in polluting industries will soon see their tax liability increase. The Algerian state budget for 2002 will introduce three new environmental taxes that are under attack by corporate groups. The targeted industries are the manufacturing, raw material processing and health care sectors.

Morocco to Introduce Regional Investment Bureaus: Streamlining the Process of Enterprise Creation

Morocco is working to improve its administration of foreign and domestic investment. It is about to open its regional investment offices scheduled to be operational before yearend.

This new initiative comes as a response to the declining volume of investments and the growing complaints from the investment community at large. Demands from investors and potential ones focus on a number of areas including the proximity of the administration, simplification of procedures, and the reduction of players in the administration.

Constitutional Revision: Bouteflika to Seek More Power for the Presidency - Popular Referendum Expected
