Principal host and chair of the forum, Arezki Daoud is a leading analyst on North African affairs. He is the editor and publisher of The North Africa Journal, a publication that reaches over 50,000 decision makers worldwide. Having lived and worked in North Africa, Mr. Daoud's analytical expertise on the region spans from the energy and industrial sectors to security and political affairs. Mr. Daoud is familiar with the speech circuit and briefing the business and government communities on the countries of the Maghreb region. He is widely quoted in the press, including the BBC Radio, Forbes Magazine, The New York Times, Business Week, The Washington Post, USA Today, International Herald Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, The Street.com, and other publications. Mr. Daoud holds a BS degree from the National Institute of Hydrocarbons of Algeria, the IFP, and a Masters degree in International Economics from Suffolk University in Boston. Co-host of the forum and Deputy Editor of The North Africa Journal Alessandro Bruno is a leading analyst of North African, Arab and international affairs. He specializes in strategic political and economic developments relating to the North African oil industry and Middle East politics. Mr. Bruno has also worked as a research analyst in the global investment banking sector for a leading international advisory group. Quoted in the press such as The Financial Times, Mr. Bruno holds a Master of Arts in Middle East Studies and Bachelor of Arts in Near Eastern Studies. He has completed course work for a PhD in Middle East Politics at the University of Toronto. Mr. Bruno brings a wealth of international experience, having lived and worked abroad in a variety of different countries. Most recently, he lived in Libya working as a Program Officer (JPO) with the United Nations Development Program. Mr. Bruno is fluent in English, Italian, Spanish and French and has a working knowledge of Portuguese, Arabic and German.


David L. Goldwyn
President

Mr. David L. Goldwyn is President of Goldwyn International Strategies LLC, an international energy consulting firm, with extensive knowledge of North Africa's oil and gas issues. Through GIS, Goldwyn has advised the World Bank on power sector reform, assisted the US Department of State, and advised a host of Fortune 100 companies on political risk, economic sanctions, and corporate social responsibility issues. He is a Senior Fellow in the Energy Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and serves on the Council of Foreign Relations (CFR) Task Force on Energy Security. Previously, Mr. Goldwyn served as Assistant Secretary of Energy for International Affairs, Counselor to the Secretary of Energy, and national security deputy to Ambassador Bill Richardson, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations under President Bill Clinton. Goldwyn served in the Office of the Under Secretary for Political Affairs at the State Department under Presidents George H.W. Bush and Clinton, acting as Chief of Staff from 1993-1997. Goldwyn first served in the government as an Attorney-Adviser in the Office of the Legal Adviser at the State Department from 1991 to 1992. Goldwyn has taught a graduate seminar on the Geopolitics of Energy at Columbia and Georgetown Universities, been a frequent commentator on NPR, CNN, the BBC, and in energy trade newspapers. He has addressed the Conference Board, the Georgetown Leadership Seminar, the University of California (Berkeley) School of Journalism and executive meetings of Statoil, ConocoPhillips, and ExxonMobil on US energy policy. Mr. Goldwyn acquired extensive international business experience as an attorney with the New York law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton and Garrison from 1986 to 1991. Goldwyn is the author of numerous publications on transparency in the oil sector and on US Strategic Reserve policy.


Dr. Cyril Widdershoven
Principal Consultant
Energy, Utilities & Chemicals

Dr. Cyril Widdershoven has been long-time observer of the global energy market. He is the current Principal Consultant on Energy, Utilities & Chemicals issues at global consulting and advisory firm Capgemini, providing thought leadership to customers. Fluent in five languages, Dr. Widdershoven earned his post graduate degrees at King's College, University of London. He held several senior publishing positions in leading energy publications such as Afroil, Middle East Oil and Gas, and North Africa Oil and Gas Magazine Cairo. He was head of The Mediterranean Energy Political Risk Consultancy. Dr. Widdershoven worked on M&A operations in Egypt, Libya, Sudan and Iran, market studies for pipeline operators in Libya, Algeria, Nigeria and Turkey, risk assessments for institutional investors and banks in Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Iraq, all while being and advisor to the Dutch government and international organizations. In earlier career assignments, he held the position of Senior Financial Analyst Oil & Gas Sector FDA, managing and advising oil and gas sector advisory department of main pension and institutional investor advising consultancy on equity and bond market, with the main targets being Shell, BP, Total, Eni, BG, Heerema, Fugro, DSM, DowChemicals, BASF, Statoil, Schlumberger, Halliburton, PSG, Repsol



Haim Malka
Deputy Director

Mr. Haim Malka is deputy director of the Middle East program at the Washington-based think-tank the Center for Strategic and International Studies where he also focuses on North Africa issues. Mr. Malka led the CSIS Maghreb roundtable initiative. Before joining CSIS, he was a research analyst at the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution. Mr. Malka spent six years living and working in Jerusalem, where he was a television news producer for Reuters and Fox News Channel. He is a frequent commentator in print, on radio, and on television and is coauthor of Arab Reform and Foreign Aid: Lessons from Morocco (CSIS, 2006) and “Forcing Choices: Testing the Transformation of Hamas,” Washington Quarterly (Autumn 2005). He received a B.A. from the University of Washington in Seattle and an M.A. from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.



Dr. Geoff Porter
Analyst, Middle East & Africa

 


Dr. Geoff D. Porter is an analyst in Eurasia Group's Middle East & Africa practice. He is primarily responsible for analyzing North Africa, covering Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania. In addition, Dr. Porter covers and coordinates the practice's research on Middle East issues including the eastern Mediterranean and the Arabian peninsula. Prior to joining Eurasia Group, Dr. Porter was an Assistant Professor of International Studies and Middle Eastern History at Trinity College in Hartford, CT. During the course of his academic career he lived and worked in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia. He has contributed to op-ed pieces at The North Africa Journal, published in the Journal of North African Studies, The Middle East Research and Information Project, The New York Times, The Financial Times and The International Herald Tribune and has appeared on major media outlets. Dr. Porter has a BA (1992) in Islamic Studies, an MA (1996) in Near Eastern Languages, and a PhD (2002) in Middle Eastern Studies from New York University. He is fluent in Modern Standard Arabic, North African Colloquial Arabic and French.



Michael Waldron
Oil Markets Analyst

Mr. Michael Waldron is an oil markets analyst within the Commodities Research team at Lehman Brothers in New York. He previously served as an officer within the Military Intelligence branch of the US Army. His prior assignments include duty within the intelligence directorate at US Central Command. Mr. Weldron holds an MA in International Relations and International Economics from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and a BA in Economics and Government from Cornell Universty.




Mazine Kessaissia
Analyst

Mr. Mazine Kessaissia is an Analyst within the Energy Project & Structured Finance group at Societe Generale in New York, with extensive knowledge of North Africa's LNG market position. He specializes in debt financings for the oil & gas industry, including LNG and petrochemicals projects. Prior to his current position, Mr. Kessaissia was business consultant at PFC Energy, an international strategic petroleum consulting firm, where he essentially focused on LNG markets. In addition, Mr. Kessaissia brings a strong industry experience having worked as a drilling engineer in the E&P industry with BP in North Africa and the UK, and with Schlumberger in West Africa. Mr. Kessaissia holds an MBA in Energy Finance from The University of Texas at Austin and a BS and MS in Civil Engineering from the Ecole Supérieure des Travaux Publics (ESTP) in Paris.


Susanna Campagna
Political Risk Analyst

Ms. Susanna Campagna is a Political Risk Analyst who specializes on the Middle East and North Africa region at EDC. EDC is Canada's export credit agency, which offers commercial solutions to help Canadian exporters and investors expand their international business. EDC's knowledge and partnerships are used by 6,400 Canadian companies and their global customers in up to 200 markets worldwide each year. Ms. Campagna is also an analyst at the Canadian Government's Privy Council Office - International Assessment on Iraq and Arabian Peninsula. Having traveled to the North Africa region, Ms. Campagna studied at Ottawa University and holds an M.A. in International Affairs from Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University
