French Drug Maker Opens Tunisian Unit

The unit, which is located in Foundouk Choucha in Ben Arous, will produce
anti-malaria drugs in their dry form and other medicines targeted to the African
market. Pierre Fabre controls a majority stake in the new unit with 65% equity.
The two companies have invested some €5.5 million in establishing their
operation. Production will begin in the first half of 2009. The company’s
founding figure, Pierre Fabre, has travelled to Tunisia for the January 6, 2009
opening ceremony.
In 2010, the new unit, called Pierre Fabre Médicament Production Tunisie or
PFMPT SA, could begin producing drugs for the European market as an alternative
site for the existing Gien, France-based site. If the Tunisian unit becomes a
replacement for the Gien unit, this would represent a substantial gain for the
Tunisian drugs industry. Indeed, Gien is Pierre Fabre biggest facility with 440
employees.
