Morocco Braces for a Shift to Generic Drugs

Market Trends: More than 70% of the medicines sold in the Moroccan market are expected to swing into the generic space within the next three years. Their formulation will become public domain, likely to create an interesting new dynamic in the marketplace with competition expected to heat up, Multinational pharmaceutical giants are already bracing for the shift.

Many such companies are already producing generic versions of their drugs, in an effort to have a first-mover advantage. Others are starting to plan their roadmap for producing generics. Among the companies most concerned by the change and preparing for it are Sanofi-Aventis, who currently owns the drug Wintrop, Servier with Biogaran, Novartis with Sandoz and the American giant Pfizer, which has announced the upcoming launch of its own generic products.
