China’s Makes Major Industrial Inroad in Algeria

For years, Algeria has been attempting to build an auto assembly industry. But bad luck, poor timing, and a whole set of economic and political troubles forced it to postpone its project to a better time.

Italy’s FIAT was one of the first most serious parties interested in an assembly facility in the North African nation. But disagreements over pricing and the unclear role played by the Agneli family, the owner of FIAR, led to the collapse of the negotiations and the pursuit of other venues for the Algerian side. Algeria has been in constant talks with European, Japanese and Korean car makers, and of all potential players in a future auto industry in Algeria, the ones that managed to make a foray are the Chinese. Algeria has to set up a national project to design, engineer and build a national Algerian car,whatever the price. It is feasible technically and viable economically.
Algeria has the technological capacity to build its own automotive industry, it has to start by building on success of local automotive companies.
What Algeria needs are Self-reliance, self-confidence, hard work and discipline.
