Bouteflika Announces Constitutional Revision, to Seek Third Term

It is with no surprise that the Algerian president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced his intention to change the country’s constitution, a move that will pave the way for a third presidential term.

The Algerian constitution has a two term limit, which has long been challenged by many in the FLN and RND nationalist parties, who are strong allies of the current president. For observers and the Algerian population this is not a surprise. The president has never hidden his intentions to tweak the country’s highest law to allow an opening for a third term. He reiterated his position as recently as last month to revisit the constitution, a call he made several times in the past since he first took power in 1999. Continue reading here.
