The two countries severed their relations following the arrest of Muamar Kaddafi’s son, Hannibal, and his wife by Swiss police for alleged mistreatment of a hotel employee in Geneva. Despite the dropping of the charges by the Swiss authorities following an out-of-court settlement, Libya ordered a series of actions against Swiss interests, including travel limitations and a halt in Libyan oil and gas sales. In Switzerland, the issue has created an interesting dilemma. While an independent investigator found that Geneva police acted badly, the city’s authorities remain entrenched in their position and refuse to acknowledge any wrongdoing.
